Boosting Your Immune System: FACT VS. FICTION
Boosting your immune system is important right now, but there are a lot of myths surrounding just how to do that. There’s a pervasive myth that mega doses of vitamin-c can help you strengthen your immune system, but the fact of the matter is that it takes a balance of nutrients along with a balanced lifestyle to keep your body healthy and strong. As restaurant workers remain on the front lines feeding people under quarantine, how can they ensure they are in the best possible position to fight off any infection that may come along?
Lifestyle is a major part of this puzzle, and oftentimes restaurant workers don’t have the greatest lifestyle. Long hours and odd schedules - doubles, open-close, and close-open shifts all decrease the body’s ability to fight off infections. Fortunately in the wake of COVID-19 many restaurants are shifting their hours to adjust to changes in business patterns, which has given many restaurant workers a better chance of getting regular sleep and maintaining a regular schedule.
Staying up to date on vaccinations is also important. That’s not because a flu shot will help you fight off COVID-19, it’s because you don’t want to already be sick with something else when you are exposed to the novel coronavirus and you also don’t want to overwhelm the medical system with non-coronavirus cases right now.
Exercising, maintaining a healthy diet, getting plenty of sleep, and working to decrease stress levels are all important things to do to maintain your immune system, especially right now. Restaurant staff should also be practicing social distancing and frequent handwashing in order to prevent the spread within the staff as they are working to still serve customers.
